Day #11 – Harvard, MIT, Fenway Park, Harbor Cruise

Today was the day of dreams – visiting Harvard & MIT and getting an inside view of Fenway Park (the home of Boston Redsox).

A short 10-mins bus ride from our hotel, took us to Harvard. As part of our plan we had thought of visiting the Anthropology Departments at every University for kid#1. So we walked our way to the Anthropology Dept.

On the way we saw Peabody Museum of Archeology and the School of Near East (Egyptian) studies – got kid #1 quiet excited.

As we walked to the Harvard Square train station we stopped at Harvard Yard for a short water break, saw a statue of John Harvard and ran into a University Tour.

The train ride from Harvard to MIT was quick. But kid #2 couldnt stop laughing when he saw this ad. “Your poop could save a life” – especially the picture of a guy gifting his heart…. I am very curious. One day I will find time to explore what this means. 😂

Go figure! I am definitely curious.

The T station at Kendall had a large picture wall with various important things in Science that happened over the last 100+ years.

MIT campus was everything that I had expected – serene, grand and apparently alot more activity than Harvard on a summer Saturday morning. People were biking, jogging, walking along the riverfront, martial arts class in the lawns, etc. Kid #2 got a kick out of seeing the Physics Department.

We were so engrossed in seeing Cambridge that we ended up short on time for our reservations for Tour of Fenway. So we took a Lyft and got to Fenway. Surrounded by souvenir shops and bars and restaurants it was an old ball park it kind of reminded me of the locales around Wrigley Field in Chicago. Most modern day stadiums are grander with huge parking lots around them – but not these old stadiums. They are in residential neighborhoods – surrounded by homes.

From the stands

While kids are not a baseball fan, I dont care much about the teams – the historical perspective of the tour was interesting to all of us. The stadium looked small when we were in the stands, but from the press box, top level and the Green Monster it looked huge. It was hard to comprehend we were 400+ yards away from home plate.

With all that walking in morning we were already at 10,000 steps by 1pm. I called Harbor Cruises to see if they can change our scheduled tour from 2pm to 3pm – and they accommodated us. We decided to take a break, have an extended lunch and enjoy the hot summer day.

One item that was on kid #1’s to do list – see the Boston Tea Party Museum. We couldnt find enough time to go inside, but we walked to the site and saw few people dumping “tea” into the water.

For the evening we met with my friend from undergrad school (20-yrs ago). I met my friend and his wife last time in 2005 in my first trip to Boston. They had just been married for few months and were living in Rhode Island at the time. 15 years down and 4 kids later, it felt like we had been in constant touch. Kids got together and ofcourse didnt want to leave. Lets hope we dont have to wait another 15 years for next meeting.

Having fun w friends
🙌 Great times 🙌
